If you are flying into San Jose for your cruise, here are some things you should know that the main piers (PanAm and Carnival piers) are only a 15-minutes car ride from the airport. If you arrive there early to explore the area before check in at the ship, you could store your luggage at Barrachina restaurant in Old San Juan where you can easily explore on foot or on the free trolley service.

Disney Magic, Royal Caribbean, Princess cruise ships dock at Panamerican Pier, while Carnival, Celebrity and other ships dock in Old San Juan pier. Pier 1 to 6 is a short walking distance to Old San Juan. If you want to buy stuff, be aware that the stores in Old San Juan open after 5 p.m. if their are cruise ships dock in port.

The narrow streets and monuments of Old San Juan are best appreciated on foot rather on board a tour bus or taxi. If you plan to explore further afield to the rain-forest be aware that you need at least 8 hours in port to enjoy a rainforest tour. It takes around 2 hrs to the forest there and back plus the hour you must be on board the ship prior to the departing schedule.
