Bus is great but in Geneva getting around by bus so expensive that is not worth it, especially if it's 5 of you hiring a car, though keep in mind that car hire rates are higher over the weekend. As far as ski resorts near Geneva, you are spoiled for choice! The most popular ski resorts are Flaine, Chamonix and Verbier, though Champery, Avoriaz, les Diablerets are also good options.
most swiss ski resorts are accessible from Geneva airport by train. Zermatt, Champery, Vallorcine, Argentiere and Chamonix, they are all accessible by train from Geneva. All you have to do is change at Martigny then you get the spectacular part-cog railway. Out of all the ski resorts I would choose staying at Chamonix because you get to ride the Chamonix-Mont Blanc express train for free if you stay with them.
car share in Geneva
there is plenty of ski resorts that you can access by train such as Verbier but there are many others too. Aside from train or car rental, you'll find there will be lots of people heading to the mountains for ski days who are often willing to car share with a small petrol contribution so, it's worth considering that option.
