I am thinking of taking the train from Istanbul to Tehran, it is about a 3 day trip. Before the Iranian border, there is a lake called Van,and the train tracks stop and start on opposite sides of the lake, according to map. On the railway website it just has signs like --- and the crossing seems to take 8 hours but there is no explanation.

Does anyone know how the lake is crossed?

They use a train ferry to cross Lake Van so, you will transfer from the train to the ship and back again on the way back to Istanbul.

You should know that the train quality is not like the western countries both in Iran and Turkey.
