Train is not readily available everywhere in Sri Lanka but if you are based in Colombo or Kandy area you can hop on train. From Colombo there are train services to Trinco, Galle, Anuradhapura and Kandy. The nearest train station in Kandy is Peradeniya station which services Nanu Oya and Nuwara Eliya.

I would certainly advise to get familiar with Sri Lankan trains. There are different classes of trains: 1st class sleepers, observation cars and air-conditioned seats car, as well as 2nd and 3rd class seats, which are the cheapest. 3rd class is very basic and gets very crowded, while 1st class sleepers come with separate toilet and washbasin.

Experiencing train travel in Sri Lanka is one of the highlights there for sure. A lot people seem to stay clear of trains based on things they hear. The train ride from Colombo to Kandy is awesome though long (4 hrs) and rough but that's the beauty of it. Busing it in Sri Lanka is also fun but the views from the train are amazing.
