If you plan to be in Venice for a long time and fancy visiting Greece, I would really recommend going to Crete. You can do so very easily from Venice with a plane change in Athens. (Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air do this route). Another way to get to Crete is by taking the ferry to Patras or Igoumenitsa then a bus into Athens. Then the ferry or flight to Crete.

Aegean and Olympic has flights from Venice to Athens but they appear to cease in the middle of September. Try checking with Easyjet, they do direct flights to Heraklion though i believe this route is serviced in May.

You can get from Athens to Crete by plane but I prefer the ferryboat from Piraeus where you can catch a regular ferryboat service to Heraklion and Chania. The ferry ships are quite modern and they are cheaper than flying and can be quite romantic if traveling with a partner.
