A few things I would advise people traveling to Scotland is to travel between April-May, stay at Airbnb, park lodges, and budget motels and hire a rental for remote areas because public transport is limited and expensive out of the cities. As far as cities, you will love exploring Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as doing some "island hopping" starting with Arran from Ardrossan.

Glasgow is underrated...try spending the day there then head out to Loch Lomond and the area around for amazing scenery. if you are pressed for time, best you arrange an organized tour but otherwise go it alone. the best way to get to know the city is to just wander around and discover places for yourself

Scotland is definitely much cheaper than England but when eating out in places like Edinburgh or Glasgow I'd stick to the pubs. Pubs are very can get a meal for about $15 including a drink or fish and chips for ten bucks. Also, avoid tours to save up. It's best you walk and explore places yourself with a guidebook.
