The US Virgin Islands’ hotel tax is going up from 10% to 12.5 percent from 10 percent, beginning Jan. 16 2016 increase. Crucially, the tax applies to every guest that resides in a hotel, villa, timeshare, inn or any other sleeping accommodation for less than 90 days.

Basically, this tax increase (just like all others) is just another way to make the USVI even more exclusive and out of reach from the very average person.
