Mount Vitosha

Mount Vitosha is one of the most popular ski resorts in Bulgaria due in large part to its close proximity to the capital of Sofia. The Vitosha Ski Resort is ensconced in the marvelously picturesque Vitosha National Park. The mountains flank the city’s southern outskirts so access to Vitosha is possible by taking transportation to a connection that takes you deep into the national park. Although Vitosha may not be quite as well known as bigger resorts like Borovets and Bansko, it is a full-service resort where you will find everything from great skiing and snowboarding to lessons, ski equipment rental, and plenty of hotels and other accommodations within close proximity of the ski areas. There are a lot of reasons to pay a visit to the Vitosha Ski Resort if you are planning a ski trip to southeastern Europe. The ski area abounds with wildlife, features one of the highest peaks in the country (Cherni Vrah), the biggest cave system in Bulgaria, and the Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The top elevation of Mount Vitosha is 9,939 feet with a bottom elevation of 4,970 feet and a vertical drop of 1,969 feet. Eleven lifts transport eager visitors to the over 104 square miles that comprise the ski area at the resort. Out of the total number of ski runs, 55 percent are for beginners, 30 percent are for intermediates, and 15 percent are reserved for advanced skiers and snowboarders only. The Aleko skiing centre is the best place for alpine skiing at the resort. It is located in the northern portion of the ski area. With formidable and high-reaching mountain peaks such as Cherni Vruh and Black Peak (two of the highest in the country) it is easy to see why this resort is a popular thing to do for more than just its easy access from the capital city of Bulgaria.

In order to get to the Vitosha Ski Resort from Sofia, you will need to take the number 9 tram from the main terminus in the city to the Hladilnika station. Here, you can transfer on a bus to three of the ski areas at Vitosha, including Aleko, Dragalevtski, and Boyana. You will certainly be thinking about other aspects of your itinerary as well when planning a trip of such a long distance.
