The Famagusta hotels are relatively few in number, and many of them are not upscale or could use renovations, but there are still some strong options for a lovely stay. This has a lot to do with the fact that the city of Famagusta has more or less been in a state of limbo since the Turkish Army invaded Cyprus in 1974. Since the invasion, the bulk of the buildings in and around town have fallen into relative decline. That being said, there are some Famagusta hotels that have managed to hold their ground through it all, and some have even undergone renovations as tourism starts to finally rebound. A few nights or more at one of the hotels in Famagusta Cyprus can be very rewarding. After all, there are some good beaches in the area. The historical attractions in Famagusta's Old City and those in the nearby ancient city of Salamis also warrant a look.
For those who are looking for luxury lodging in Famagusta, the choices are minimal. On the hotel side of things, the Salamis Bay Conti Resort is arguably the most luxurious. There are also some attractive vacation rentals that come in the form of apartments and villas for those who are interested in an elevated level of comfort. The Salamis Bay Conti Resort can be found about five miles north of town at Salamis Bay. The golden beaches that it fronts are some of the best beaches in the immediate Famagusta area, and the rooms have a fine array of amenities. These in-room amenities include satellite TV, a mini bar, a private balcony, air conditioning, a private bathroom with a tub, and a direct dial telephone. The rooms that boast sea views are the most coveted. For those who need added space, larger suites and villa-style units are also available. The Salamis Bay Conti also features an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, massage parlors, a Turkish bath, a mini market, a rental car desk, and a casino. The long, private beach is the main attraction, however, and guests can enjoy an array of water sports if they want to do more than swim and sunbathe.
When it comes to the Famagusta hotels, staying outside of town is generally preferred, and Salamis Bay is often the destination of choice. Also found at Salamis Bay is the Long Beach Resort, and it offers 42 villa units for guests to choose from. Some of the villas have recently been refurbished, and future renovations are planned. The villas, while not overly luxurious, offer many of the comforts and conveniences of home, including modern bathrooms, kitchen facilities, air conditioning, cable TV, and high-speed internet access. When guests aren't relaxing in their clean and comfortable villas at the Long Beach Resort, they can enjoy the wonderful beach just outside their doors or head north to the Karpas Peninsula to enjoy its spectacular strips of sand. The drive down to Famagusta only takes about ten minutes, and exploring its Old City is a treat. Tours of Salamis and other places can also be arranged at the hotel. Thanks to the luxurious hotel pool with its swim-up bar, however, leaving the grounds might prove unattractive. A few other bars round out the facilities, and the restaurant serves both international and local fare.
Rare is the Famagusta accommodation that can actually be found in town. Most visitors stay in a nearby hotel and venture into town when they want to enjoy attractions like the beautiful Famagusta Cathedral. Just seven miles from the heart of town is the Majestic Beach Hotel, and it can make for an excellent area base. Guests can take advantage of a good range of amenities at the Majestic Beach Hotel when they're not exploring the Famagusta streets. Two swimming pools figure among the general amenities at this mid-price Famagusta accommodation, as do a pair of restaurants, a pair of bars, and a snack shop. As for the guest units, they feature satellite TV, air conditioning, mini bars, direct dial phones, en-suite bathrooms, and hair dryers. Guests can choose from standard rooms, larger suites, and even larger villas. Whereas the rooms and suites are equipped with private balconies, the villas have open-air terraces. When a slice of the North Cyprus way of life is what you have in mind for your next Cyprus visit, the Majestic Beach Hotel is worth keeping in mind.
While the Majestic Beach Hotel features relatively low rates, there are cheaper hotels in Famagusta Cyprus that budget-minded visitors might prefer. These hotels tend to lack in amenities, service, and overall cleanliness, but at least they're cheap. The Altun Tabya Hotel isn't the cheapest around, though it arguably tops the list of cheaper hotels. Unlike many of the Famagusta hotels, this one is actually found in town. In fact, it is located within the Venetian walls of the Old City. The rooms at this centrally-located Famagusta accommodation could use some work, though they do feature private bathrooms, which is a plus at this price. If you want to stay in the center of Famagusta, the Altun Tabya Hotel is pretty much your only option. A decent breakfast is included in the rates, which might be enough to lure some travelers in.
As a side note, those looking to save on their Famagusta accommodation can also consider an area camping ground. These camping grounds are also known as Holiday Parks, and there are a good amount spread throughout North Cyprus.
