Argeles sur Mer

Argeles sur Mer is a beach resort about fifteen miles south of Perpignan and about fifteen miles north of France's border with Spain. Many of the Argeles sur Mer France hotels take advantage of one of the longest unbroken stretches of beach on France's Mediterranean coast. Argeles Beach itself is nearly ten miles long. The beaches continue nearly unbroken almost all the way to Marseille—a distance of nearly 200 miles. The town boasts a lovely seaside promenade lined with restaurants, bars, bistros, and small shops.

There are many things to do in Argeles sur Mer other than enjoy this wonderful stretch of beach. Park of Valmy, located a couple miles south of the city, offers walking trails to explore Mediterranean birds and flora of the region, picnic areas next to water features and fountains, and summer concerts. In July, one of the country's major music festivals, Les Deferlantes, is held here.

Argeles sur Mer sits at the foot of the Alberes Mountains, which form the eastern end of the Pyrenees Mountains that separate France and Spain. These mountains provide wonderful hiking trails and magnificent views of the sea below. There are also a number of fortified castles and towers dating to the medieval Kings of Majorca and the Knights Templar.

There are a number of hotels here as well. Perhaps the most exclusive of the Argeles sur Mer France hotels is located in the Park of Valmy; the Chateau Valmy is a fairy tale mansion built in the late 1800s with luxurious rooms and a full-service spa and wellness center. It is set in a wooded estate, with a serene and relaxing swimming pool. It has extensive vineyards and produces its own wines.

A hotel with similar facilities and amenities is the nearby Hotel Le Cottage. It is also set in a wooded green park, and has 33 luxurious rooms, many with balconies for views of the sea or mountains. Le Cottage is located at 21 Rue Arthur Rimbaud, which is near the town center and just off Avenue du 8 Mai 1945 one of the main boulevards leading from town down to the seaside promenade.

If you're looking for Argeles sur Mer France hotels that are beach resorts, you will find many along the seaside promenade. The Hotel Plage des Pins is a fairly typical example. With an address of simply Alee des Pins, it is located just about exactly at the center of the promenade. It has 50 air-conditioned rooms, a large swimming pool, restaurant and bar, and beach frontage that includes a play area and wading pool for children. Just north of this is the Grand Hotel du Lido, with almost 70 rooms and similar facilities. Most of these resorts are family oriented three-star properties that are very popular with French nationals and tourists from the UK.

The area also has many self-catering vacation rentals, holiday villas, and apartments. Just behind the seaside promenade are some camping resorts that offer swimming pools and other resort type facilities. Accommodation is in caravans and mobile homes or charming beach cottages.
