Montpellier France is a city built on two hills of the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, near the stunning southern French coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Though smaller than Marseilles and Nice, Montpellier provides the same historic architecture and charming atmosphere of its more popular neighbors. The narrow streets and bustling squares of Montpellier boast a sunny Mediterranean climate. It is also the home of the University of Montpellier since the 12th century, making it one of the oldest college towns in the world.
Montpellier is filled with history. The historic center of Montpellier is called the Ecusson, and many areas, such as Rue du Bras de Fer, display impressive architecture dating back to medieval times. Dating back to the 13th century, the Tour des Pins and Tour de la Babotte are remnants of the city’s medieval walls and towers. Montpellier is also home to a 12th century Jewish bathhouse, the oldest botanical garden in France, and a cathedral built in the 14th century. The highest point of the Ecusson is home to an arch called the Porte du Peyrou and the Place Royal du Peyrou, both built in the 17th century. The Saint Clément Aqueduct dates back to the 18th century.
The cultural center of Montpellier is Place de la Comédie, named after the Opera Comédie, built in 1888. This bustling public space is home to many cafes, street markets, and shops. Montpellier’s many museums and performance halls has established the city as a destination for performing arts. Every summer, the city hosts the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier, honoring classical music, jazz, and opera through concerts, performances, films, and discussions. Most of this festival is free of charge and very popular with local students.
The best beach near Montpellier France is Plage de l’Espiguette, or Espiguette Beach, one of the largest and most popular beaches in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. Situated on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the beach is a short drive outside Montpellier, near a smaller town called Grau-du-Roi. At six miles in length and surrounded by dunes and lagoons, the long, flat sands of Espiguette provide visitors with a great deal of space and solitude. This beach is never crowded. There are only two small eateries near the parking lot. All other facilities are half a mile away in Grau-du-Roi. However, it is this sense of untamed adventure and privacy that continue to draw beach lovers to Espiguette Beach. Certain segments of L’Espiguette cater specifically to naturists and the LGBT community, but all are welcome. Signs are posted where appropriate.
There is a wide spectrum of lodging options in Montpellier France. Many visitors prefer the ambiance of Montpellier’s many boutique hotels, such as Hotel du Parc and Hotel d'Aragon. These comfortable yet modestly sized hotels are often housed in the city’s historic buildings, centrally located within walking distance of many Montpellier attractions. Travelers wishing to indulge in French architectural opulence should consider staying at La Maison Blanche or Chateau Residence de Bionne. While both hotels are located outside the city center, they are situated in or near stunning manor houses. Comfortable chain hotels are also located throughout the city, such as Best Western Eurociel, Pullman Montpellier Antigone, and Courtyard by Marriott Montpellier. These recognizable brands provide expected amenities, such as wireless internet access, swimming pools, and cable television. Bed and breakfasts are located throughout the region, including Les 4 Etoiles, known for excellent service and delicious daily breakfasts. Private vacation rentals are also available in Montpellier.
