Porto Katsiki

Porto Katsiki is one of the most beautiful and impressive beaches in the Greek islands, whether you approach on a boat from the sea or arrive from inland. It is set at the foot of dramatic steep cliffs. If you're coming over land, you have to walk down 80 steep steps—and climb them again when leaving—so this is not a good beach for those with walking issues unless they arrive on a boat. Porto Katsiki in Lefkada is the destination for daily taxi boat cruises from neighboring villages, so you can experience this lovely place if you do have some walking difficulty. Additionally, many sailing holidays in the Ionian Sea will make a stop at Porto Katsiki Beach because of its famed beauty.

If you're coming to Porto Katsiki for sunbathing, plan your trip to arrive in the afternoon. It's a western facing beach, so the cliffs shade it in the mornings. There is little shade during the afternoons, so bring sunscreen, and a beach umbrella, or both. Things to do on the island in the morning before arriving at the beach include visiting the old lighthouse, windmills, and monastery of Agios Nikolaos on Cape Lefkada south of the beach. This is an extraordinarily scenic point, and the scuba diving below is excellent. Getting down to these scenic sights on the southernmost tip of the island requires driving about ten miles on twisting, unpaved roads. Additionally, the island's unique geographical position and high cliffs make it quite windy and one of the best places in the country for windsurfing and kite surfing. Mornings and late afternoon are the best time to go to Porto Katsiki Beach for these activities.

The majority of the hotels near Porto Katsiki are in the southern town of Vassiliki, one of the only island ports where ferries arrive. You have a fairly good choice of three-star hotels here, as well as a number of apartments. Even the hotels are much like apartments, as many have two bedrooms and a kitchenette, such as the Hotel Odeon with its own beach and windsurfing school. Staying in this town gives you good access to Porto Katsiki in Lefkada including car rentals and boat trips. The closest village to Porto Katsiki Beach is Athani, about five miles away, and you will find some nice studio apartments here. Another option is a traditional country house. A few around Porto Katsiki have been renovated for guests. The Meli Traditional House in the village of Dragano is an excellent example. This is a beautiful mansion dating to the nineteenth century, with three charming bedrooms that can be booked as bed and breakfast accommodation. Small groups can reserve the entire property.

The island is connected by road to the mainland via a series of drawbridges, so it is possible to arrive with your own vehicle or car rental. Do be aware that the narrow road leading to Porto Katsiki in Lefkada can be quite crowded during the peak summer season, sometimes creating a mini traffic jam in the middle of nowhere. If you arrive on one of these days, you can largely miss this traffic by visiting nearby Egremni Beach, which has fewer steps down for access as well as some shopping, bars, and dining spots.
