Esztergom Hotels

Esztergom is slightly larger but just as charming and picturesque as Szentendre, its fellow historic Danube Bend town. The town is not much farther from Budapest than Szentendre is and, because it also lies on the Danube, is a common port stop for cruises and day-trip destination from the capital. Because of this, there are fewer Esztergom hotels than you might imagine of a town with a population of 30,000. But don’t despair – there are good Esztergom accommodation options and cheap hotels in Esztergom to be had.

If you’re looking for deluxe 5-star Esztergom hotels you will need to go outside of town. One of the best is the Polus Palace Thermal Golf Club Hotel. As its name implies, it encompasses many of the facilities that resorts usually have, including the thermal spas for which Hungary is so well known. The property is actually an ideal location from which to explore Szentendre, Budapest, and Esztergom if you have the transportation of a car at your disposal.

Some of the best Hungary apartments and pensions are small, family-run guesthouses that offer a truly authentic experience, and Esztergom lodging includes several of these. Like the Pension Desci and Ria Pension, most are located on quiet residential streets within a short walking distance of the town center. Generally, reasonable rates include cold buffet breakfast and good restaurants and other dining choices are nearby. As an added bonus, many are charming historic buildings; Pension Desci was built on a wine cellar in 1896. This type of intimate Esztergom lodging has only a few rooms, so you actually are living like the locals.

Located at the foot of Basilica Hill, the Saint Adalbert Hotel is directly next to Esztergom’s venerable and beautiful Saint Adalbert Seminary. In fact, this Esztergom accommodation is operated by the seminary, and guests have access to the seminary’s lovely gardens. For a taste of history you can simply walk next door and explore the Christian Museum or try dining at the seminary restaurant. While it is called a hotel, it’s more like one of the very good Hungary hostels or pensions, and it also has apartments with kitchens available. This is also one of the cheap hotels in Esztergom available to the budget conscious.

There are some good Esztergom hotels that are a little more upscale as well. One of the nicest properties in town is the Hotel Esztergom, conveniently located within sight of the Primate’s Palace, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The hotel offers all the amenities you would expect of a good 3-star or 4-star hotel, including a restaurant. Additionally, the hotel can assist you with things to do in an around town – whether it is boating, fishing, or hiking in the countryside.

Good Esztergom lodging can also be found at the Hotel Róza. One of the attractions of Hotel Róza is its extensive landscaped and forested back gardens. It has slightly fewer amenities than Hotel Esztergom – cold buffet breakfast is included, for instance, but there is no onsite restaurant. However, it does have plenty of amenities to keep you comfortable and is within about a mile of restaurants, town center shopping, and the river. It’s only about a half-mile to a local bar, if that’s of interest to you! Also, rooms have microwave ovens and refrigerators, so this Esztergom accommodation offers a lot for those looking for green spaces, easy accessibility to the sites and attractive prices.
