Pecs hotels offer both quality and variety, even though they are fewer in number
than you might expect of a city rich in history
and filled with grand architecture—or of a large city with a population of almost
200,000. It’s not that there is lack of things
to do and see, for there are many. It’s because this city, like Szentendre
and Esztergom along the Danube Bend,
is most often a day excursion for deluxe Danube River cruise ships. Thus, Pecs
hotels haven’t proliferated as much as they might, even though the city is certainly
worth more than a day excursion.
But there are very good Pecs accommodation options to choose from that will meet any budget and taste. You may not have the gold-plated opulence that’s available in some Budapest hotels but you can find first-rate comfort in 3-star and 4-star hotels that are close to great restaurants and shopping opportunities—with easy accessibility to the city’s sites and attractions. And, you’re apt to find some hidden gems behind some deceptively ordinary exteriors. They may be cheap hotels in Pecs but they give you great vacations when you’re on a budget.
You really won’t find any 5-star deluxe hotels in Pecs city proper—as is the
case with Debrecen to the east and most
towns and cities other than Budapest.
But, one example of cheap hotels in Pecs that’s a hidden gem is the 3-star Palatinus
Hotel. It was built at the beginning of the twentieth century and occupies a
wonderful old Art Deco building in the center of the historic city. The beautifully
restored lobby is embellished with rich mahogany paneling, marble columns, touches
of gilt, and elaborate chandeliers. Its elegant banquet hall is where the great
Hungarian composer Béla Bartók once performed. The breakfast room has the feel
of being in the salon of a palace, and there is fine dining
on regional cuisine in its popular sidewalk restaurant. With that kind of atmosphere,
it can be forgiven its rather ordinary rooms. But make no mistake—this lodging
in Pecs has clean, comfortable rooms with all the amenities needed for a satisfying
While not all Pecs hotels can boast this kind of ambience, the rooms, and amenities are fairly typical. Many of the small hotels fall in the category of the best Hungary apartments and pensions. They are small, family-run guesthouses that offer a truly authentic experience, and many of the hotels in Pecs are in this category. They are often located on quiet residential streets within a short walking distance of the town center. Generally, reasonable rates include cold buffet breakfast with good restaurants and other dining choices nearby. This type of intimate Pecs accommodation usually has only a few rooms, so you actually are living like the locals.
They are also like many of the holiday flats in Hungary in that they can be self-catering with included kitchens and kitchenettes and can be reserved both short- and long-term. Many of the cheap hotels in Pecs fall in this category, and include hotel rooms, little studio apartments and larger one, two or three-bedroom apartments. Take a look at the Aranyhajo Guesthouse in the city center and Hotel Fenyves Panorama in a terrific setting in the Mecsek Hills with a fabulous view of the city below.
There are two new 4-star hotels in Pecs with more upscale amenities, like hairdryers in bathrooms (instead of borrowing from reception), Internet access, room service, plenty of things to do and full restaurants. The Boutique Hotel Sopianae is in a charming historic building in the city center, and its interior has been completely renovated and modernized. The Kikelek is located up in the Mecsek Hills with stunning views of the forest hills and down to the city. It has two restaurants, one of which offers arguably the best fine dining and traditional cuisine in Pecs. Appropriate for a country known for its thermal spas and baths, iIt also has a complete Wellness Center with indoor and outdoor pools, hut tub, sauna, and steam bath.
You can see that there are plenty of cheap hotels in Pecs that offer excellent amenities and are accessible to all the major sites and attractions. Even the “high-end” 4-star properties are very reasonably priced. And, if you’re longing for cruises on the Danube, it is possible to book a day or overnight trip while staying in Pecs.
