As befits such a popular tourist destination, you can find cheap Sopron lodging as well as 5-star Sopron hotels and resorts and just about everything in-between. So many tourists flock to this town for two main reasons. It possesses an almost perfectly preserved medieval town center, with architecture that only Budapest rivals. Its also has a great location in the mountains and lush forests of western Hungary with outdoor activities from hiking and skiing to swimming and horseback riding. And, because the town is only 45 miles away from Vienna Austria, you can even stay at a property in that country. But the town is well worth more than a quick visit from across the border, in which case a hotel in Sopron or one of the resorts in the countryside nearby is recommended.
The best 4-star property in town is probably the Pannonnia Med, now a Best Western property. It’s the oldest hotel in Sopron and is located near all of the most popular things to do right in the heart of town. Housed in a lovely classical building built in 1893, it boasts a full wellness center, and all the amenities you’d expect of a fine international hotel, including two excellent dining venues.
There are several Sopron hotels like this in the town center, as well as even more extensive and upscale resorts in the countryside outside of town for those looking for a more extended stay Sopron accommodation in beautiful natural surroundings. The Hotel Fagus is one of these. In the hills and surrounded by the lush Lõvérek forest, it is the newest hotel in Sapron and the most luxurious. Two restaurants and two bars serving snacks make it a self-contained resort. Its extensive wellness center contains all the usual spa amenities from a swimming pool to massage services, and a fitness center with exercise room and squash court.
In the 3-star category, is the Wollner Hotel, in a beautifully renovated building full of history and more than 300 years old. Its atmospheric wine cellar bar is comprised of the original structure and it’s centrally located on a quiet street lined with charming houses and buildings. This small hotel in Sopron has a boutique guesthouse feel, with quaint oddly-shaped rooms and lovely architectural features. It also has a very good restaurant. While these aren’t entirely cheap Sopron lodging opportunities, hidden mid-range gems like this can be found all around town. They don’t offer the lowest price in town, but they are very good value for the money.
While there isn’t a large number of really cheap Sopron lodging in the town center, there is some. These properties may belong more in the category of one of the many Hungary apartments and guesthouses, but they offer excellent services and reasonable rates. One of these Sopron hotels is the Palatinus Hostel, with single and double rooms as well as apartment suites for up to four guests. Furnished modestly, it has a restaurant serving breakfast (included in the room rate) and dinner. There are many charming guesthouses (panzios) like this in and around town. Some are genuine old houses or wine cellars and some are newer Sopron hotels built with sensitivity to the history of the town. There is a handful of youth hostels providing bedrooms that sleep as many ten guests, have shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Most of these properties don’t have restaurants, but will have good nearby dining venues.
