Szentendre Hotels

There is a surprisingly small number of Szentendre hotels considering what a popular tourist destination the charming town is. Szentendre has about 20,000 permanent residents, but during holidays and peak Szendentre tourism season, the population more than triples. The relative scarcity of Szentendre lodging is not due to an uninviting atmosphere, remoteness of location, or poor transportation infrastructure. In fact, it is just the opposite that makes it appear that Szentendre accommodation and properties are fewer in number than you might expect.

Szentendre is actually one of the most charming and picturesque towns in all of Hungary and boasts wonderful things to do and see. It’s set on the Danube River, one of Europe’s greatest highways of transportation and commerce. Because of this Szentendre lodging will many times be aboard deluxe river cruise ships or more modest barges and boats that make a daytime or overnight stop in town. Docking conveniently right in the heart of towns, villages, and cities is one of the benefits of vacation packages that include a river cruise, whether it’s Cologne Germany on the Rhine or Vienna Austria further north on the Danube. Don’t miss this Szentendre lodging alternative; it’s a wonderful way to explore Hungary and Europe.

Hungary’s capital, the great imperial city of Budapest, is less than an hour away from Szentendre driving on a good highway or riding by convenient rail. This is another reason that one might think Szentendre accommodation is either scarce or mostly on river cruise ships. Many of the tourists and visitors are sleeping in Budapest hotels while visiting Szentendre for a day trip.

But Szentendre is well worth more than a day trip or single overnight on vacations that include cruises on the Danube. There are an ample number of Szentendre hotels to meet the needs of those who want more time to do some shopping and explore the town’s many art galleries, discover great Hungarian cuisine while dining at one of the many restaurants, cafés, and bistros, or simply stroll the quaint streets of the charming town.

Szentendre owes much of its popularity to its wonderful location on the Danube, and you will find some charming small Szentendre hotels along the river. One of these is the Kentaur Hotel, set in a quiet square just steps from the riverfront. It has high-ceilinged cosy rooms and, like most hotels, includes a good breakfast. Most everything is within walking distance, and the hotel is happy to provide weekly rates. The Beta Hotel Provincia and the Hotel Waterfront are also typical of the kinds of mid-range Szentendre hotels available.

The town's popularity is also due to the great shopping available in the many galleries, boutiques and crafts shops. Therefore, you\'ll find little guesthouses and pensions in the residential streets surrounding the shopping district. These generally have a small number of rooms and provide both bed and breakfast. When you\'re walking these streets, look for the word "panzio," which is Hungarian for pension. The Apollo Panzio, only ten minutes walking distance from the town center, is one of these. It has six small and simple, but clean, rooms and a little breakfast room. There’s even a outdoor swimming pool and garden barbecue area.

Cheap hotels in Szentendre doesn’t mean inferior Szentendre accommodation by any means. Check out the Matthias Rex Guest House and Restaurant. For quite an attractive rate, you can get a nice hotel room or even apartment housed in a historic building with a restaurant and right in the center of the historic town. This is typical of the kinds of Hungary hostels and apartments that are available in Szentendre.

Most of the 5-star and truly deluxe Szentendre accommodation options are either in nearby Budapest or several miles out of town. One of the best is the Polus Palace Thermal Golf Club Hotel, just north of Budapest. As its name implies, it encompasses many of the facilities that resorts usually have, and provides easy access to the delights of Szentendre if you have the transportation of a car at your disposal.
