Leaning Tower of Pisa Facts

The most interesting Leaning Tower of Pisa facts relate to the structure’s rather long building period and its perpetual lean. It took no less than 187 years to finish the construction process, and today, the famous Italy attraction has a slant angle of nearly four degrees.

Various efforts were made over time to try to halt the increasing lean of the tower in Pisa. Many of these efforts had no real effect or only served to worsen things. As a result of safety concerns, the structure was closed to the public in 1990. During the period that the tower was closed, more efforts were made to stabilize it, and they finally had some success. Excavations that were carried out around the base were among the measures taken. Engineers also fixed cables to the Leaning Tower, and weights were added to the high side.
Leaning Tower of Pisa facts see the popular Italy tourist attraction being re-opened to the public in 2001. People can once again climb the more than 200 steps to the top, though since the number of daily visitors is controlled, it is a good idea to get your Leaning Tower tickets in advance if possible.
It should be noted that the Leaning Tower isn’t the only Campo dei Miracoli structure that is tilted. The Baptistery also leans, as does the Duomo. You don’t have to limit yourself to the Campo dei Miracoli square if you want to find Pisa structures that lean, however. Many of the city’s older buildings have shifted to some degree over the years, and they include a tower that goes by the name of San Michele degli Scalzi. To blame for all this lack of even-level integrity is the rather sandy and saturated ground on which Pisa sits.
