Hotel Westend, Merano

Hotel Westend

Speckbacherstrasse 9

The Hotel Westend was, in fact, built as a private villa in 1890 by the then-famous local architect Pietro Delugan to serve as his very own personal visiting-card, the perfect example of his art and skill and certainly with one of the most beautiful facades in all Merano at that time. The building is now just recognized as a true jewel of the decorated Liberty style and has been under the protection of the Belle Arti, a national society for valuable historic buildings, since the year 1984. The Villa pleasantly situated along the cool, shady riverwalk once known as the Stefanie Promenade, was sold to the Poder family in 1907 and they managed it as a guest house through the troubled times of two World Wars and the very unsettled period afterwards. A host of famous guests have stayed at the Westend, including the German poet Gottfreid Benn who wrote many letters and poems to friend and family during his stay. The Strohmer family, long active in the hotel and catering business and already owners of the Hotel Europa Splendid, bought the Hotel in 1983 and remodeled it completely with both taste and style. The Westend was awarded 3-star status in 1986. The hotel has a delightful garden along the river and is in a quiet, yet central, position away from the hustle and bustle of the town - the ideal place for a truly relaxing holiday. Out guests never fail to remark about the comfortable and cozy atmosphere, the spacious and airy rooms, the excellent home-cooking, the attentive service and the warm welcome they always get from the owners and staff alike. We feel sure you will enjoy your stay here at the Westend and look forward to seeing you soon.
