Salerno

Salerno Italy is a popular tourist destination located about 30 miles southeast of Naples on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital of the province of Salerno, which is situated on the Gulf of Salerno. There are a wide variety of things to do in Salerno, from visiting castles and monuments like the Castello di Arechi, to enjoying the local cuisine and culture. Salerno is the central town on the Amalfi Coast, together with other great destinations such as Positano and Amalfi. One of the many buildings of cultural and historical interest in Salerno is the seventh-century Castello di Arechi. It is situated on the Bonadies Mountain and requires a 900-plus foot trek. It is one of the most impressive examples of architecture from antiquity in Salerno and is a must see for any and all history fans. Castello di Arechi was originally constructed for the Lombard Prince Arechi II who had moved his Dukedom from the city of Benevento to Salerno.

The Salerno Cathedral (or Duomo) is another of the most popular attractions in the town. It is a Romanesque structure with an interior that is wonderfully ornate. It was dedicated to Saint Matthew and was consecrated all the way back in 1085. When you visit Salerno, you will get a good idea of the long history in this part of the world. Salerno has a unique charm all its own and offers visitors a wide variety of things to do and attractions to enjoy.
