Despite its somewhat overwhelming list of attractions in the city, Rome is surprisingly easy to navigate. So, it doesn't matter which of the hotels in Rome Italy you choose - just walk a few seconds in any direction and you will find a wealth of things to do and see. Monuments and historic piazzas abound throughout the city like lily pads in a tiny marsh, and each neighborhood in the vast metropolis has its own charm, its own pocket of historical sites, its own legends.
Hotels in central Rome near Piazza Navona are the most sought after. You are equally close to ancient Rome as you are to the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese. And the Vatican, with all its history and splendor, is just a quick jaunt across the Tiber. The hotels in central Rome are also nearby the most popular and rambunctious bars in the entire city, and appeal to wealth and youth in equal measures. The Hotel Raphael blends in so well with the grandeur of Piazza Navona that you forget it is not a tourist site itself and the collection of Picassos (ceramics, not paintings) inside does little to clear up this misconception. The Hotel Navona, though it gets its namesake from the nearby Piazza, does not encapsulate the teeming energy of the area quite like its name would suggest. Instead, it is on a narrow street just south, and features a well-maintained courtyard and one of the best locations in the city. Thus, the Hotel Navona lives up to its reputation as one of the nicest cheap hotels in Rome.
As we branch out from the hotels in central Rome, things get a little more convoluted. The hotels near the Spanish Steps are murder on the bank account, no matter what value your ATM displays. The Hassler does have one of the most distinctive names of all the hotels in Rome Italy, though. And one of its best locations, right at the top of the Spanish steps. For this area, the Hotel Palamento is probably your best bet if you want one of the cheap hotels in Rome, as it forgoes many luxuries in favor of modest functionality. Of course, it still offers a garden on its roof and endless views of the city.
The district of Trastevere is world-renowned as one
of the best places to eat in
the entire world, and the hotels here are a nice break
from the usual tourist-driven selections in the other
sections of Rome. It is said that the true connoisseurs
of the city rate this part of Rome above all others. The
hotels however, are sparse in comparison with the rest
of the city. The finest is the Hotel Ponte Sisto, located
on the banks of the Tiber and offering views of the river,
ancient Rome and St. Peter's.
A lot of the hotels in Rome Italy are located nearby the train station, or in the neighboring Via Veneto area. Despite boasting a number of the cheap hotels in Rome, a majority located within a few blocks of the train station is more than a bit sketchy. You would do better to venture further west towards Piazza Barberini, or north towards the Villa Borghese. That being said, The Hotel Columbia is a graceful find and the Hotel Artemide is the best the area surrounding the train station has to offer.
