Sorrento Limoncello

Sorrento limoncello is known for its quality, and as such, many tourists hope to sample some of this liqueur while in the Sorrento area. As the name would imply, limoncello in general is a lemon-flavored liqueur. It has an alcohol content of 35 percent at the least, and the very best is arguably that which is made from Sorrento lemon peels. Local factories in the Sorrento area employ traditional methods in order to render their special liqueur, and it is possible to visit such a factory for some insight and tasting.

Limoncello is produced throughout much of southern Italy, as well as in small parts of France and on the Maltese island of Gozo. Particularly popular in Italy for a long time running, it has been making a name for itself in other parts of the world in recent years especially. You can now find restaurants that serve limoncello in the US, the UK, and New Zealand, for example, and these are just some examples. Traditionally speaking, it is the Sorrento lemon peel that is used to make the most "authentic" versions, though most lemons will produce a peel that is satisfactory enough.

A digestive, limoncello is typically chilled and served after dinner. That's not the only way that it can be served, however. More and more cocktails are starting to feature it as an ingredient. Among the liqueur's main benefits is the fact that while it imparts plenty of lemon flavor, it is not as bitter or sour as lemon juice.

Tours of the Amalfi Coast that include some Limoncello tasting in Sorrento or some other area locale can be arranged. Often times on these tours, a driver chauffeurs guests around in a comfortable vehicle, and as far as limoncello tasting is concerned, stops are made at liqueur-producing factories. During a tour of these factories, visitors also get to learn how to make their own limoncello on most occasions. Also an option when it comes to doing some limoncello tasting in Sorrento are the local shops. Virtually every shop in town that sells the stuff also offers samples, and there are all kinds of varieties to try. Some shops also specialize in making candy, the likes of which is often lemon-flavored.

You can find this office off Piazza Tasso at Via Luigi De Maio 35. Also worth keeping in mind is the fact that there is a lemon grove right in the middle of Sorrento. It is possible to stroll through this grove, and many a visitor samples limoncello at one of the tasting booths. It is also possible to purchase a bottle at the grove to take home.
