Piazza Tasso

Piazza Tasso is considered to be the heart of Sorrento, Italy. It is also known as the main square in the city and is quite often bustling with traffic during the day. Once the sun sets over Sorrento, however, the traffic dissipates and the square takes on a different atmosphere. Two of the hottest clubs in town call Piazza Tasso home, and they are especially lively on summer nights. At one of the clubs, traditional folk dances that are known as Tarantella Shows are offered at various periods throughout the night. Otherwise, you can expect a DJ to be spinning the tunes, as is true at the other club.

The main square in Sorrento is an excellent place to start walking tours during the day. After checking out the square's statue, which depicts Torquato Tasso, visitors might hop on Via Pieta. This street is found on the square's west side and features some interesting attractions, including the beautiful Veniero Palace. Farther down the street is a former palace that boasts a lovely portal from the fourteenth century, and just steps from this historic edifice is the renowned Sorrento Cathedral. On the eastern side of Piazza Tasso is a shop-lined street that tourists might also find interesting, and it should be noted that numerous cafes and restaurants can also be found in the immediate area.

Just off the main square in Sorrento is another square that tourists will want to keep in mind. It is known as Piazza Antonino, and crowning it is the beautiful Basilica di Sant-Antonino. The crypt inside this church holds the body of the city's patron saint, Sant-Antonino, and there other interesting things to see inside during a visit.

Also found off Piazza Tasso is the main Sorrento tourist office at Via Luigi De Maio, 35. General hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and during the peak travel months of July and August, the office also opens from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sundays.
