Gozo hotels are not as varied as on the island of Malta, but there are many available for you to choose from. More and more Gozo accommodations are being built and the smaller island is beginning to rival its larger neighbor as a desirable destination for vacations.
If you plan on a day trip to pristine little Comino Island during your stay, the most convenient lodging in Gozo will be around the Mgarr ferry port on the southern tip of the island. From here, Comino is only two miles away, and the only practical transportation is by boat. The best Gozo accommodations here will be found at the Grand Hotel (pictured), set on a hill in the town with spectacular views of the harbor. Many of its rooms and suites have terraces and sea views, and the hotel offers a swimming pool, a fine dining spot, and bars and lounges. This is one of the best equipped Gozo hotels to cater weddings, which have become increasingly popular here.
You will find the best beaches on the eastern side of the island around Marsalforn and on the western coast near Xlendi Bay and Dwerja Bay. However there are not many beach hotels on Gozo Island right on the sand because the island has such a rocky coastline with dramatic cliffs and because the development of resorts is so young. However, you can find beach hotels on Gozo Island that have spectacular views and easy access to the coastline.
Around Xlendi Bay, look for the Hotel Xlendi Resort, one of the newest beach hotels on Gozo Island and with a full-service spa. It also boasts a rooftop swimming pool with a waterfall and wonderful views of one of the most picturesque bays in the country. The best Gozo accommodations near Dweja Bay will undoubtedly be found at the Kempinski, part of the respected European chain of luxury hotels. It is an extensive resort complex set in the countryside, but still less than a mile away from the sea. It also has a full-service spa and fitness center, three fine dining spots, two bars, and four swimming pools (one indoors and heated). This is one of the best hotels on Gozo or on larger Malta Island, and is a perfect base for hiking, horseback riding, and cycling. It also provides easy access to Dwerja Bay, with its black lagoon, grottoes, and 200-foot-high Fungus Rock guarding the bay. Also here is the Azure Window, a scenic rock arch similar to the Blue Lagoon on Comino.
In Marsalforn, one of the best Gozo hotels is the Calypso. It is only a short walk from the beach and has 100 rooms, and with sea views. The name of the property comes from Gozo’s history. Legend has it that this is the isle of Ogygia where Odysseus was held prisoner by the nymph Calypso in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Wherever you stay on Gozo, you will find that scuba diving is high on the list of activities. This island has some of the best dive spots, and most of the hotels can assist you with diving tours and excursions.
