5 Star Hotel Malta

Locating a 5 star hotel Malta is possible on both Gozo Island and Malta Island, the second largest and largest islands in the archipelago. Two or three decades ago, your 5 star property Malta choices could be counted on one hand. But as this beautiful Mediterranean country has been "discovered" and become more and more popular as a tourist destination, many other world-class elegant hotels have sprung up. You can find a luxury hotel in Malta that will suit just about all tastes. Each offers something a little different, as there are few "cookie cutter" properties.

If you're looking for a Malta luxury hotel that is steeped in the long and rich history of the Maltese islands, you will find several. Most of these are located on Malta Island, as this is where the oldest cities are located, including the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage capital city of Valletta and the ancient walled city of Mdina. Built literally into the medieval walls of Mdina, the only 5 star hotel Malta in the country's first capital is the beautiful Xara Palace. It is located in an opulent sixteenth-century palazzo, and is one of the area's preferred venues for weddings.

The venerable Phoenicia (pictured) is Vallletta's most historic 5 star property Malta as it was built in 1947 during the British colonial times. Among its first guests were the young Princess Elizabeth, before she became Queen of England, and her husband Prince Philip. Unusual for this city where real estate is at a premium, the Phoenicia is set in 7.5 acres of lush manicured gardens with lovely walkways leading right down to the sea.

While the Westin Dragonara luxury hotel in Malta is more modern (built in the 1960s), it sits on the historic Dragonara Peninsula that is anchored by the Dragonara Casino, a former summer palace built in 1870 for a member of the Maltese aristocracy. It is located in the St Julians neighborhood of Paceville, and is within walking distance of the area's lively nightlife and beaches. This is one of the island's resorts, and you will find similar modern seaside resorts in this area.

The best sandy beaches are located in the northern part of the island around Mellieha, and you have several choices for a 5 star hotel Malta in this area, some set right on the beach. These are primarily modern resort complexes with several swimming pools and dining spots, a variety of leisure activities and water sports, and a long stretch of sandy beach. Most are officially rated somewhere between 4 and 5 stars.

The best 5 star property Malta on Gozo Island is undoubtedly the Kempinski San Lawrenz, set in the countryside on the northwest part of the island. It is only about a mile from Dwerja Bay on the coast and some of the best scuba diving in the country (the hotel claims it is the third best diving spot in the world). It is built in the style of opulent country villas and boasts three restaurants and several bars, a full-service spa and wellness center, tennis courts and fitness center, swimming pools, and plenty of activities for children and adults alike.

For a luxury hotel in Malta on tiny Comino Island, you have only one choice. The Comino Hotel and Bungalows provides the only accommodation on this little island that is only about one square mile in area. It definitely has a 5 star location, with the main hotel set on San Niklaw Bay across from the famous Blue Lagoon and its charming bungalows on secluded Santa Marija Bay.
