Sliema hotels stand out because so many of them in the town center are former palaces and villas that once served the wealthy nobility of neighboring Valletta as retreats for their summer holidays. These hotels in Sliema Malta offer unique experiences, a taste of history, and an opulent bygone lifestyle.
A prime example of palace-type lodging in Sliema is the beautiful Palazzo Capua, built in the early part of the 1800s and today one of the town's five star boutique luxury hotels. There are so many buildings of historic significance here that the government of Malta is not able to care for them all as needed. And, while regulations concerning the remodeling of historic landmarks are quite strict, the government has recognized the value of having private citizens develop them commercially and give them the care and use they deserve. The Palazzo Capua is typical of this kind of Sliema accommodation that gradually fell into disrepair after World War II. Today, it has been restored to its former royal splendor and offers only five exclusive and elegant suites. Facilities include a luxuriant full-service spa and one of the finest gourmet dining spots in the area.
Two more of the excellent hotels in Sliema Malta are the sister properties of the Palazzo Capua, the Victoria Hotel (four stars), and the Palace Hotel (also five stars). These three Sliema hotels share the spa and wellness center, and all three are popular venues for weddings. They have a full-time staff dedicated to weddings and other special events, and can handle all the details from reception dinners to the bride's makeup and the honeymoon.
Also, part of the history of this seaport region are the numerous coastal forts and citadels, watchtowers and battlements that look out over the sea and guard the entrance to several harbors. Some Sliema accommodation can be found in these, and even a few restaurants occupy refurbished forts.
There are also Sliema hotels that are more typical beach resorts. Sliema is well known for its Strand, the long stretch of sandy beaches that almost ring the city. Here, facing Paceville and St Julians are the Plaza Hotel and Plaza Regency Hotel, connect by a sky bridge on the sixth floors. These offer wonderful views out over the bay and have easy access to beaches as well as a lovely public park.
While most hotels in Sliema Malta are fairly upscale, it is possible to find cheaper Sliema accommodation if you are traveling during the off season or have booked vacation packages. There are also smaller guesthouses and family run bed and breakfast inns that are in simpler homes. These give you great access to all the attractions in the area while providing clean and comfortable cheap accommodation. The town of Sliema is quite compact, only about fifteen square blocks plus Tigne Point with its historic fort being developed into luxury condos and vacation rentals. Everything is within easy walking distance—or a quick boat ride across the bay. Public transportation to other places on the island is quite reliable, and many hotels will assist you with tours and excursions.
