The city of Amsterdam is home to more than 40 museums, and travelers should have no trouble finding Amsterdam museums that interest them. Museums in Amsterdam range from the three most famous Dutch museums, to the oldest Amsterdam sex museum in the world, and everything in between. Amsterdam museums offer something for just about everyone in your travel group.
Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam
Considered to be the “biggest” of the museums in Amsterdam the Van Gogh Museum houses almost every piece of work done by the famous painter. Quite literally, just about every time the man put pencil to paper, the work was retrieved and can be found here in the Van Gogh Museum.
This is one of the three museums that make up the Museumplein in Amsterdam. Here, travelers will find an exhaustive collection of Dutch works and in particular works from the Dutch Golden Age. Visitors of every age will enjoy this spot, one of the most popular Amsterdam museums.
Venus Temple
Venus Temple is the oldest and largest Amsterdam sex museums. Featuring everything from erotic art to historic artifacts all relating to sex, this Amsterdam sex museum is the king of them all, and is open seven days a week.
Pianola Museum
One of the most unique museums in Amsterdam, the Pianola Museum is home to the world’s largest collections of old player-pianos and automated music machines. The museum has more than 14,000 recordings of work by Debussy, Gershwin and more, and is open only on Sundays.
Electric Tramline Museum
This is the only museum in town that offers rides of a sort. A collection of trams are housed here at the Electric Tramline Museum, and some of them still run. The trams run between Amsterdam and Amstelveen, and are a big hit among families and children in particular.
In addition to these favorites, Amsterdam is also home to the Coffee and Tea Museum, the Pipe Cabinet Museum, and the Eyeglass Museum. A whole host of other great museums are also open for touring in Amsterdam. Many of the minor museums are only open a couple of days a week, so if there is a particular museum you have your heart set on visiting, be sure you call ahead and confirm that they are open.
