Netherlands Major Events

Many travelers making their way to The Netherlands will be just in time for one of The Netherlands major events. Historical events of The Netherlands as well as Amsterdam events and other Netherlands major events can all be great way to celebrate a holiday with the locals. Some of The Netherlands major events and specific Amsterdam events are shown below.

Cannabis Cup

Where else but in Amsterdam will you find the annual Cannabis Cup? Taking the idea of an Amsterdam coffee shop to whole new heights, the Cannabis Cup happens each November in Amsterdam. All attendees are cannabis judges, and travel from booth to booth sampling cannabis and choosing their favorite.

Film Festival Rotterdam

More than 300 indie films are screened at theaters around town during this great Rotterdam festival, which happens each year in January and February.

Windmill Days

All four working windmills at this re-created old village and open-air museum in the Zanstreek, just north of Amsterdam, are open to the public. This is one of the best historical events of the Netherlands and is open from March to October.

Opening of Keukenhof

Located in Lisse, this is also one of the most fun historical events of The Netherlands. An incredible display of tulips, daffodils and other flowers are blooming in a garden that spans many acres.

National Museum Weekend

During National Museum weekend, annually in April, most museums in the Netherlands offer free or reduced admission and have special exhibits.

Bulb District Flower Parade

If you just can’t get enough of the flowers, head to the Flower parade in April.

Liberation Day

This is one of the biggest Amsterdam events during the year. Liberation Day commemorates the end of World War II and Holland's liberation from Nazi occupation, and is celebrated in May.

Sinterklaas Arrives

St. Nicholas visits children in The Netherlands in late November, handing out candy in the streets with his black-clothed helpers. This is followed somewhat closely by St. Nicholas's Eve, which is on December 5th.
