Museumplein Amsterdam

Museumplein Amsterdam is another of the squares in Amsterdam. The Museumplein Amsterdam is surrounded by some of the most important and attractive museums in Amsterdam, and is a hub for Amsterdam tourism. Though the square enjoys a long history, it has also enjoyed a recent facelift and reconstruction. Amsterdam tourism in the area has only increased since this reconstruction, and the Museumplein Amsterdam continues to be a gathering place for locals and foreigners. Three vital museums are found near this Museum Square.

Stedelijk Museum

The Stedelijk Museum is the Municipal Museum and is filled with modern art. This popular Museum Square museum has a collection which includes a room painted by Karel Appel and other famous modern artists. The top floor of this museum offers a sweeping view of the city.

Rijksmuseum

Located near the Museum Square, this museum is a favorite for Amsterdam tourism. This is a national museum of the Netherlands, and is dedicated to arts, crafts and history. The Dutch Golden Age is incredibly well-represented here, and travelers looking for Dutch history will want to head here first. The museum itself was first founded in 1800, and its staggering collection of Rembrandts and other famous Dutch works has been growing ever since.

Van Gogh Museum

As many art lovers know, Van Gogh was a Dutch painter for the post-impressionist era. Fittingly, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is a tribute to his work, and has a collection of some of his finest pieces. The museum is also home to some of Van Gogh’s early and lesser known works, and is a must-see for anyone who loves Van Gogh. That said, the museum is a must-see even for travelers who feel ambivalently about the work of Van Gogh. It is simply too good an opportunity to pass up.

Choosing to visit just one, or all, of the museums may your only difficult decision when heading for the Museumplein. All three museums offer chances to see rare art that is almost never seen in the original outside of Amsterdam.
