Fundacio Joan Miro

The Fundacio Joan Miro is one of the most popular art museums in Barcelona. The world’s most complete collection of works by Joan Miro—more than 14,000 pieces—is found at the Miro Museum. The work of Joan Miro, who was born in Barcelona in 1893, is described as having distinct qualities of Catalonia. His bright colors, shapes, and forms are recognizable to visitors who weren’t sure if they were familiar with his work.

In addition, this art museum in Barcelona not only displays work of Joan Miro, but also features work by other artists. It was the wish of Miro himself that the foundation play a role in supporting contemporary artists. The museum first opened its doors in 1975, in a Mediterranean-style building by Josep Lluis Sert. As the first public institution in Barcelona to focus on contemporary art, the museum receives a great number of visitors.

The Fundacio Joan Miro is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and on Sunday and public holidays from 10 am to 2:30 pm. The Miro Museum is always closed on Mondays. Located in Montjuic, also home to the Poble Espanyol and the Magic Fountain, it is possible to reach this art museum in Barcelona with public transport. Buses 50, 55, and 193 will bring you to the museum. It is also possible to take the funicular from Para lel Metro station. If you prefer to drive independently, there is also a parking lot for visitors at the museum.

During a trip to this museum, you will see over 200 paintings, 178 sculptures, and countless drawings. History buffs will love to trace his artistic development through time, from his time in Paris and working with the surrealists to his reactions to the Spanish Civil War. If you’re interested in taking a guided tour of the museum, these are available on the weekend only. Another art museum in Barcelona to check out is the Museu Nacional d’Art, or Barcelona Art Museum.
