Found approximately 60 miles northeast of Barcelona, this capital of the Girona province is arguably one of Spain’s most important historical sites. The city was founded by the Romans and then ruled by the Visigoths before the Moors gained a stronghold. In 1785, Girona was conquered by Charlemagne and became one of the fourteen original countships of the Catalonia region. Subsequently, the Moors regained control, though they were finally driven out in 1015. The list of sieges goes on, and it is interesting to note that Girona withstood no less than three invasions by Napolean in the early 1800s. Girona’s history is very much on display, especially in the city’s old quarter, which is known as the Call. Among the main features of this historic, labyrinthine district are its ancient houses. The fortifications include two sections of a city wall that was originally built by the Romans and later modified.

Things To Do In Girona

Whether you are staying overnight in Girona or are simply dropping into town on a day trip, there are lots of good sights to see. The city itself is best explored by foot, and you could spend hours in the old quarter alone. A good place to begin a walking tour is at the ancient stone footbridge that spans the Onyar River. There, you can savor some of the very best views of Girona before moving on. Arguably the most significant landmark in all of Girona is the city’s Cathedral. This 14th century structure represents many different architectural styles, most notably the Catalan baroque style. The Girona Cathedral also contains numerous works of art, many of which are on display in its museum. Walking along the old fortification walls and climbing the affiliated towers is another idea for things to do in Girona. The views from the towers in particular are delightful. When a break from walking is in order during your Girona visit, you might look to do some cycling. During the professional cycling season, various cyclists of the professional ilk are known to reside in Girona, as just outside of the city the terrain provides excellent training grounds.

Girona Beaches

The city of Girona is found a little ways inland. As such, the city does not boast its own beaches. Enticing Mediterranean beaches and coves aren’t very far away, however, so Girona visitors can surely hope to include some beach exposure in their travel plans. Just a 30-minute drive or so is all that is required to get from the city to the coast. Popular Girona area beach destinations include Roses and L’Escala, to name just a couple. Less popular, but also worthy of consideration, is Cadaques. Both hotels and vacation rentals can be found on or near the beaches in the Girona area, so travelers who wish to stay along the coast should have little trouble finding accommodations that suit their preference.
