Basilica San Juan de Dios

The Basilica San Juan de Dios is among the best attractions and one of the most beautiful churches located in Granada Spain. Built in the 1700s to honor one of Spain's most iconic religious figures, it boasts an amazing facade that is adorned with statues of angels and San Juan de Dios himself. Also of particular interest are the artifacts that can be found inside. Highlights include an ornate altar that is covered in gold leaf, fine frescoes, and sculptures by artist Diego Sanchez de Sarabia, who was a native son of Granada.

San Juan de Dios, or Saint John of God, as he is known in English, was born in Portugal in 1495 and died in Granada on his birthday just 55 years later. During his lifetime, he was a shepherd and a soldier, but this is not where he stands out. After making the decision to dedicate his life to religious causes and caring for the sick, Saint John of God founded the Order of Hospitallers, which is now known as the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God. This order maintains a base in more than 40 different countries, and it is officially called upon when the Pope needs dental or medical care.

The Iglesia de San Juan de Dios Granada was more specifically built between the years 1737 and 1759. This was an era when the ornate Baroque style of architecture was flourishing throughout much of Europe, and visitors can easily notice its application when it comes to the church's immaculate facade and altar. Behind the altar in a silver urn are the remains of San Juan de Dios, and thanks in part to this fact, the church was canonized in 1916. Those who are looking for things to do in Granada are certainly encouraged to drop by and take a look at this remarkable religious institution, as it impresses on many different levels. The address is Calle San Juan de Dios, 23, and the general visiting hours are 7:30 am to 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
