Since the central city and its major attractions are found within such a compact area, good residential areas will still have easy access to the sights. The neighborhoods just north of Retiro Park are quiet and refined. You can walk to the park and to several of the museums. There are also stations for the metro and trains quite nearby, so you can get just about anywhere quickly and conveniently.

You’ll also find less expensive Madrid vacation rentals around Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, the hub of the city’s history and daily activities, as well as the location of some of the best tapas bars. These offer furnished apartments that are clean, comfortable, and modest in historic buildings with good security. One thing to remember about all but the most luxurious city apartments (as well as hotels) is that the rooms are often small by American standards.
