Murcia Spain

Murcia Spain, located in the southeast region known as the Costa Calida, is a historical and lively town situated on the banks of the Segura River. It is one of the most historical and unique cities in the country, and it enjoys year-round sunshine. There are various types of architecture to be seen around the town, the famous Murcia Cathedral, plenty of restaurants and cafes, the Salzillo Museum and an upbeat, party atmosphere. Murcia is a great place for those who wish to explore and soak up the sun.
Murcia Spain is easily accessible from within the country and from international destinations. The two closest airports to Murcia are the Murcia Airport and the Alicante Airport; both about an hour drive into town. Once in Spain, it is quite easy to travel the area with major motorways and rail lines going through the town. The best time of year to visit this gem on the Costa Calida is during the summer months or during one of the various festivals that are held throughout the year. However, the weather is so great you don’t have to be picky about when you travel to Murcia. The off peak months see less tourists and more accommodation options but the sun is still shining and there is hardly any rainfall.
Those visiting Murcia will find that they will not run short of things to do. This beautiful town started off as the ancient city of Madina Mursiay in the eighth century and evolved under Arab rule. The town has flourished and is now a popular destination on the Spanish touring circuit. The varied history has blessed Murcia with a plethora of architecture. Visitors can see the ancient city walls, Arab mosques that were later turned into churches, and beautiful buildings that are part of the university. It is a great place to just walk around and take in the different styles that evolved over the years from various influences.
One of the most prominent buildings, and most visited spots, is the Murcia Cathedral. It was dedicated in 1465 and is a brilliant mix of architectural styles as it was continuously added on to up until the late eighteenth century. A few styles that visitors are able to marvel at are Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The Murcia Cathedral is a must-see while visiting this lively town and will give visitors a true insight on the evolvement of architectural styles. The cathedral is situated in the beautiful Plaza del Cardinal Belluga where the residency of the Bishop of Murcia is also located. The plaza is also a great spot for a quick bite to eat or some souvenir shopping.
The Salzillo Museum is also another must-see on your visit to Murcia. It is located in the Plaza de San Agustin and is housed in a beautiful circular Baroque chapel that was completed in 1777. The museum is dedicated to Francisco Salzillo, a Murcia-born sculptor, and houses many of his famous works. Visitors can view his processional figures and the most prized sculpture, which shows a nativity scene home to more than 500 figures clad in traditional eighteenth-century Murcian costumes. The Salzillo Museum is a great way to learn about and appreciate Spanish art. With beautiful sunshine and architecture, it is hard to pass up a trip this lovely city, and you’ll find plenty of hotels in Murcia to choose among when you start planning your trip to Spain.
