Goteborg

Goteborg

The city of Gothenburg Sweden is located on Sweden’s west coast, and is often referred to as the, “gateway to northern Europe” thanks to its large port.  Gothenburg Sweden, referred to as Goteborg Sweden in Swedish, is the second largest city in Sweden after Stockholm.  Gothenburg Sweden has the distinction of being home to Scandinavia’s largest university, and is also considered to be the friendliest town in Sweden for visiting tourists.

The city of Goteborg Sweden became an official city early in the 17th century, when King Gustavus Adolphus founded the area.  Goteborg Sweden was a strategically important city to the empire because of its prime western location on the sea.  Not only was it an important location for trade in and out of the city, but maintaining control of Goteborg also meant being able to defend the inland town from raids and attacks.

Although for many years fishing was the main source of income for the residents of Goteborg, by the 18th century trade had become their most valuable source of income.  The Swedish East India Company was founded in 1731, and the city of Goteborg played a major role in its success.  Goteborg also became the main port of departure for Swedish emigrants heading to North America, and the town of Goteborg, Nebraska, reflects this.

Among the many attractions in Goteborg, Liseberg Park is perhaps one of the most popular.  This is Scandinavia’s largest and most appealing theme park, with a selection of the some of the world’s top ranked steel and wooden roller coasters.  The park has been open for more than 75 years, and continues to build on its success by adding more rides and more fun.  Another great attraction in Goteborg is the Goteborg Konstmuseum, located in the heart of the city.  This is the leading museum of art in Gothenburg, with a large collection of modern art.  The museum is open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays.

If you are planning a trip to Goteborg, you may also be looking for a flight to Goteborg.  The most frequent flight to Goteborg is a flight from the somewhat nearby city of Copenhagen, with about 5 to 10 flights running daily between the two cities.  You can also find a frequent flight to Goteborg from the city of Stockholm during the daytime hours.  The airport in Goteborg is the Landvetter Airport, which is located about 15 miles east of the city and all of the great Goteborg hotels.
