History of Sweden

The history of Sweden goes back many centuries, with some of the most notable Sweden history begging in with the Vikings in 700 AD. Although there is not much written documentation regarding the Vikings, the Viking traditions are still much beloved, along with Viking lore, in the history of Sweden. In addition to the Viking legends, Sweden history also includes important steps in the reform of Christianity and the Renaissance period, following the Middle Ages.

The early history of Sweden during the Middle Ages saw the onset of the Plague. During the 14th century, the people of Sweden, along with people throughout much of Europe, fell victim to the Black Death that wiped out much of Europe’s population during the Middle Ages. During this time, Sweden history also reflects that the religion Christianity was introduced to the people of Sweden, and the county of Sweden was consolidated with its main center being located in Ostergotland.

History about Sweden goes on to reflect the formation of a single government in northern Europe which included Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The countries were united under a single monarch and a treaty known as the Kalmar Union, which went into effect in 1389. Despite the treaty, however, the three nations were at war for many years and experienced continued strife. In 1521, King Gustav I of Sweden broke loose of the union and established an independent nation state, which was the beginning foundation for modern Sweden. As such, King Gustav I is considered to be the, "Father of the Nation".

The 17th century brought with much economical success to Sweden, and history about Sweden during this time shows the country as a prosperous force and one of the major powers of Europe. Although Sweden continued to war with some of its neighbors for years to come, by 1814 the final wars were over, and history about Sweden shows that the country has enjoyed peace ever since.

The modern history of the 18th and 19th century has seen the growth of Sweden, as its economy and population continues to increase. Much of this wealth led to the emigration of many Swedes to North America, where many Swedish communities have been established by Swedes who were wealthy enough to afford the boat passage across the Atlantic Ocean.

Today, the country of Sweden enjoys one of the highest standards of living in all of Europe, as well as a modern parliamentary democracy which has been in place since the end of World War I. The country of Sweden is also today the site of the Svea Hovratt building, where the Court of European Justice meets regarding EU matters.
