Basel Hotels

The Basel hotels present visitors with a good variety of accommodations to choose from. Many of the hotels in Basel Switzerland cater mostly to business travelers, though they can be just as ideal for leisure travelers who want to enjoy a range of amenities. Staying in or near the Old Town is what many visitors have in mind, but since the city boasts a competent public transportation system, getting to the heart of town won't be hard when staying further out. The rates at the Basel hotels are relatively high on the whole, though there are some deals to be had. These deals are harder to come by during Carnival time and when the June art fair is going on. Travelers who don't book their Basel accommodation well in advance for these top annual events will find that getting a room at the last minute is nearly impossible.

There are hotels in Basel Switzerland to fit most budgets. For those who are interested in luxury hotels, the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is one of the best. Found in the heart of Old Town, this grand hotel essentially sets the benchmark for quality in Basel. It overlooks the Rhine, which is part of its allure, and the most desirable rooms are those that open onto the river. There are 101 guest units at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, and while most of the standard units are spacious enough, larger suites are available. The décor is elegant in every room and suite, and amenities include soft bathrobes, luxury linens, premium bedding, flat-screen televisions, satellite TV programming, DVD/CD players, air conditioning, in-room safes, internet access, and antique furnishings. This is one of the oldest city hotels in all of Europe, and it does an exceptional job mixing modern conveniences with Old World charm. This is especially true in the comfortable guest units. Outside of the guest units, the facilities here include three quality restaurants, a bar, and a sauna.

The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois might be the most luxurious Basel accommodation, but it isn't the city's only upscale hotel. For years, the Swissotel Le Plaza (pictured) has welcomed travelers to Basel in style. The largest of the Basel hotels, it offers no less than 238 rooms and suites. All of these guest units are tastefully decorated and boast exclusive amenities. Amenity highlights include flat-screen televisions, wireless internet access, mini bars, safes, and coffee and tea making facilities. The deluxe suites are the most attractive guest units at the Swissotel Le Plaza, save for the presidential suite, which is often reserved for visiting dignitaries. Traditional and modern Swiss cuisine is on offer at the hotel's excellent restaurant, and for those who like nightlife, the chic bar is open daily from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. Other facilities at this luxury hotel in the heart of town include an indoor swimming pool and a small spa/health club, which features state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

While a luxury Basel accommodation can be ideal for several reasons, those who wish to spend less on lodging will find a good amount of mid-priced establishments. Among the best mid-range hotels in Basel Switzerland is the Dasbreitehotel. This hotel is especially attractive for those travelers who don't want to be in the heart of town. When it does come time to head into town to enjoy the various attractions, free transit passes are available for the trams. The walk into town takes about twenty minutes. Coincidentally, it's a much shorter walk to the trail that runs along the nearby stretch of the Rhine. The hotels in Basel that are further away from the heart of town tend to be cheaper, and as such, guests at the Dasbreitehotel get a lot of bang for their buck. The attractive rooms feature modern décors, as well as flat-screen cable TVs, internet access, private bathrooms with showers, and direct dial telephones. Helping to make the rates even more appealing are the complimentary breakfast buffets, which are known for their quality.

When it comes to cheap lodging in Basel, the choices are reasonably limited, though there are options. For those who really want to save on rates, a stay at a hostel might be in order. Should there be more room in the budget, then hotels like the Ibis Basel Bahnhof can be an ideal fit. This affordable Basel accommodation is close to the city's main rail station, making it an especially ideal place to stay for train travelers. The Ibis chain of hotels is well known throughout Europe, and while these hotels don't offer luxurious rooms, they are more than adequate enough for most. There are 112 total rooms at the Ibis Basel Bahnhof, and they are all clean and comfortable. Flat-screen televisions figure among the in-room amenity highlights, as do air conditioning, hair dryers, and direct dial telephones. The amenities aren't overflowing, but the comfortable beds and attractive rates go a long way. A bar is open around the clock, and breakfast is available for an added fee. Parking in an indoor garage is also available for an extra fee, as is Wi-Fi internet access.
