Sion Switzerland

Sion Switzerland, called Sitten in the German, is nestled in the Swiss Canton of Valais in the southern reaches of the country. As the canton’s capital city, Sion is modern and well-connected, an economic capital. It’s easy to reach by rail and road, 40 miles (65 kilometers) from Lausanne and 60 miles straight south of Geneva. The Sion Switzerland Airport connects the city with others communities in the Alps and beyond. Whether arriving by rail, air or car, visitors to Sion will find a lot to enjoy when they arrive.

This city, home to 30,000 people, has a long, deep history to discover, illustrated by a pair of castles that dominate the skyline: Valeria and Tourbillon. For more than 7,000 years, people have been living in these hills. Scientists consider Sion Switzerland as one of the most valuable places to study prehistoric history of Europe. These early people, from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age, left their mark on the region’s history. From there, Sion was settled by the Valais people, a Celtic tribe. By the time of Julius Caesar, the Romans arrived and named the area Sedunum. This city was the first in Switzerland designated a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the fourth century. Sion continued to flourish and grow over the intervening centuries. By the Middle Ages, the city began to connect to others as trade routes opened up and merchants’ guilds became more powerful. In the 18th and the 19th centuries, things became more contentious as the lands changed hands and wars were fought. Sion was part of France and Austria before the Swiss Confederation was established in 1848.

With a stroll through Old Town Sion, museum tours, and visits to its castles, it’s easy to connect with this long and interesting history. The list of things to do in Sion is nearly as long as its history. With its central location and strong transportation system, it’s a snap to connect with anything you want to do. Castle Tourbillion is included on many guided tours, but sadly, only the ruins remain today. It’s still an imposing and important structure on the hills overlooking the Castle of Valeria. This fortified castle was first built in the 12th century. It remains intact, and its organ is one of the oldest in the world. Old Town, which features some of the original fortifications, is today home to some of the city’s coolest boutiques and restaurants serving the local specialty white wine. Wintertime visitors can make Sion Switzerland as a base for skiing. Zermatt, at the foot of the mighty Matterhorn, is a popular place to begin skiing and mountaineering close to Sion Switzerland.
