Wengen

Wengen, much like nearby Murren, is a Swiss ski resort that was made popular by the British. The early 1900s is when British tourists first started arriving, and not long after that, they started forming ski schools and developing alpine racing. It was on Murren and Wengen ski slopes that modern ski racing actually got its start, and this is reason enough to pay the area a visit. The stunning mountain scenery is another reason why the area can make an excellent vacation destination. Here, the Jungfrau, the Monch, the Eiger, and a host of other lofty peaks rise high into the sky, helping to create a panorama that is truly divine.

As far as Switzerland ski resorts go, Wengen is relatively chic and well equipped. Cafes and restaurants line the village's main street, as do a number of shops, and there are plenty of hotels to choose from. If you are interested in an alternative to the hotels in Wengen Switzerland, the village is also home to apartment rentals. When you aren't skiing, snowboarding, dining, or shopping on your Wengen ski vacation, you can go ice skating on one of two rinks, try to secure tickets to a curling match, or go tobogganing. Prepared tracks provide terrain for winter walks, and if you want to get in from the cold, bowling and billiards are among the options for things to do. Interlaken, which is the capital of the Bernese Oberland region, is just sixteen miles from Wengen, while Murren is a mere three miles away. Indoor swimming pools can be found in Murren, and you can also find them in Interlaken if you want to go swimming, and both Interlaken and nearby Wilderswil offer tennis courts.

Every year in January, the Wengen Ski Resort plays host to the Lauberhorn Downhill Ski Race. This race is among the most renowned races on the World Cup circuit. As for the skiing in general, the more immediate Wengen area offers some 62 miles of well-prepared runs that are mostly intermediate level. Visitors can also purchase a special ski pass and access the other lifts and slopes in the Jungfrau Region. These lifts and slopes include those that are found at the nearby villages of Murren and Grindelwald. Should you be a beginner, there are plenty of practice slopes in the region. At Wengen, for example, practice slopes can be found within easy reach of the village center. Ski and snowboard instructors are on hand at the Wengen Ski Resort if you want some help developing your skills, and you can always rent equipment upon arrival if you don't have your own.

Some great off-piste runs can be found in and around Wengen for those who want to get off the established slopes. You can also arrange heli skiing excursions in the area if you are up for accessing runs that most people don't access. Regardless of which runs you spend your day on during a visit to the Wengen area, returning to town for some lively nightlife is something that you can consider adding to the agenda. During the ski season, a few bars and pubs offer relatively wild scenes. There's also the small disco at the Hotel Silberhorn, which is often packed.

The hotels in Wengen Switzerland total around 30, so finding a room is usually an easy pursuit. As you might imagine, rooms can go fast at times, especially if there are special events such as when the famous Lauberhorn Downhill Ski Race is taking place. Among the most upscale and well-established hotels in the village is the Hotel Regina. This hotel puts a premium on service, and it also offers some enticing facilities. These facilities include two restaurants, a bar, a sauna, and a fitness club. As for the 90 guest units, they are large and feature a lot of amenities.

When it comes to the hotels in Wengen Switzerland, a couple others that figure among the top picks are the Hotel Alpenrose, which offers plenty of traditional appeal, and the Hotel Baren, which is among the best overall values. It's also hard to find fault with the Schonegg Hotel, which is known for its good service and savory food. As is common at European ski resort hotels, the Schonegg includes both breakfast and dinner in its rates.
