Guernsey Museum

The Guernsey Museum is located on Guernsey Island in the British Channel Islands, off the coast of Normandy. The town of St Peter Port is where to look for the Guernsey Museum, and the museum is one of the major attractions to the town and island. While you are there, you can also take time to view the Victor Hugo House, also referred to as the Hauteville House, which was the home of author Victor Hugo for more than 15 years during his exile from France.

The Guernsey Museum is home to permanent collections, and also hosts a number of visiting exhibitions throughout the year. The Guernsey Museum is open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm, with an early closing time of 4pm from November through March. The museum is also closed on December 25 and during the month of January.

Much of the focus of the museum is on showcasing the art and natural beauty of Guernsey Island itself. Historical collections are among the first exhibits a visitor will see when touring the museum. Information about the natural history of Guernsey Island, as well as the human history of Guernsey Island is found in the museum. Currently, the museum has more than 40,000 items in its permanent collection.

The Guernsey Museum is the official museum of the British Channel Islands. As an entity that is separate from the United Kingdom and is considered to be a possession of the UK rather than part of the government, Guernsey Island has its own unique history. This history is well reflected in the island museum, which keeps records of human activity on the island, which dates back as many as 6,000 years ago, when the island was a peninsula jutting out from the mainland.

This museum in the British Channel Islands also exhibits various environmental displays. The Lukis Mineral Collection, a permanent feature of the museum, showcases local sea crystals that have been discovered along the coast of Guernsey Island. The collection, first assembled in the nineteenth century, shows groups of minerals and other like resources that were located on and around Guernsey Island. Other collections and rooms include the Brian White Gallery and the Rona Cole Gallery. The museum also features a restaurant called Café Victoria, open during museum hours, which serves snack and lunch. There is also a theater on the museum grounds showing educational films throughout the year.
