Re: BackPacking in Mexico is Safe? If that's something your're going to consider do some research on the subject before you go ahead and if at all possible take someone with you who knows where to go and where not to go. I know that tourists are targetted by pickpockets in Mexico and if something happened it would ruin your holiday. Backpacking in Mexico can be unsafe nless you go with a guide, although it depends where you want to visit.
Places I would recommend are Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Taxco, Merida, Palenque, and any of Mexico's excellent beaches.
Another option for you would be to book into a couple of hotels in various cities and take some of the local organised tours while you're there.
If you do decide to go ahead and backpack I would say get yourself a good guide book and don't go off the beaten path. There isn't a guide to Mexico on this site but you can try Lonely Planet who have a lot of information online about the country and who also make a book which you could buy before you go and take with you. Books like this also often have useful information about where to go and where not to go too which will certainly help.
Good luck and enjoy! |
