There are lots of hotels in the area that are affordable. If you're looking for fun activities that are affordable, you may want to check out some of the parks in southern Idaho. City of Rocks is an amazing place, even if you're not a climber.... they have a scenic byway you can drive and end up in the park.

If your family is into sciency stuff, I'd also suggest the Herrett Center at CSI.
