I highly recommend reading these books before going to China.... excellent descriptions of places and history....

1) Twilight in the Forbidden City - revised and illustrated 4th edition - its been republished and restored with all the illustratons. Available on Amazon.com

2) Also recommend Peking by Juliet Bredon. A fascinating description of the city and its culture written in 1920's = Also available at amazon...

Any other suggestions?
