Re: Books to read before going to China Here are some:
"River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze" by Peter Hessler. An American teacher’s story of his two years spent at a college in the isolated Yangtze River town of Fuling.
"Will the Boat Sink the Water: The Life of China's Peasants" by Chen Guidi and Wu Chuntao. For most visitors to China who will only see major cities or tourist towns, this book is a reminder that the majority of China’s population doesn’t enjoy such a privileged life.
"The Forgotten Kingdom" by Peter Goullart. A must read for anyone who visits Lijiang.
"Soul Mountain" by Gao Xinjian. It's a hard read but worth the effort. |
