Some of the best museums in the country are in Chicago.

Downtown on the just off of LSD (Lake Shore Drive) you can see the Natural History Museum - so big and so many unbelivable exhibits, you need two days at least. Also, right near Natural History, you can visit Shedd Aquarium with its brand new Ocenarium exhibit and also nearby is the Adler Planetarium. Terrific exhibits on Space and the Universe.

Just a bit south (of the Triangle mentioned above) down LSD is The Museum of Science and Industry - really cool place for kids and adults. Lots of hands on stuff and a real submarine you can go inside of and walk through. Kinda creepy!
