Italy isn’t cheap, when compared with the UK and northern Europe. Turin and Venice is pricier. At the bottom end you will pay €14 to €20 at youth hostels, where meals generally cost €9.50. The cheapest pensione is unlikely to cost less than €25 for a basic single or €40 for a double anywhere from Pisa to Palermo.

Some accommodation suggestions are as follows:

- Plus Florence is located in the center of Florence and prices start at €20 shared or €25 private.

- Book Fabric Hostel and Club located not far from downtown Naples and 15 minutes walking from Ercolano archaeological site. Prices start at €12.

- Hostel Galla is the cheapest I can see in Milan and prices start at €19.
CaSa Linger Hostel in Venice is the cheapest I can see also. Prices start at €25
