Re: Montpelier Vermont Also, Rock of Ages granite quarry (closed in winter but visitors center is open year around - you can watch craftsmen makes monuments and even sandblast your own souvenir) .
Believe it or not, some of the best statues in the state are in local cemeteries such as Hope Cemetery where Italian sculptors brought in by Rock of Ages in the early 1900's created monuments for deceased family members.
The tradition continues today with markers shaped like a stock car, soccer ball, etc. There is a tower in Hubbard Park with a great view. Morse Farm sugarworks (maple syrup producer) is about 10 minutes from downtown. Drive about 15 minutes up I-89 to Waterbury, exit 10, and take Route 100 north to take Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory tour, Cabot Cheese outlet store, Lake Champlain Chocolates tore, Cold Hollow Cider Mill, and Ziemke Glass Blowing.
Route 100 continues north a few miles to the village of Stowe which is well worth a stop also. Lots to see and do there. The ski area is about 7 miles outside the village and there are a number of activities there year around. |
