No, not really. The Dutch have all kinds of religious holidays but little feeling is attached to it, except for the believers ofcourse ;) (my experience)
Whats Holland famous for;
1. Their soft drug policy
- Marijuana can be sold, but in Coffeeshops only. It´s a dodgy policy as Coffeeshops can sell, but can not buy their stock. The demand is way higher than what the Coffeeshops can produce by themselves in a legal way so extra stock is bought ¨backdoor¨ style. This is ¨gedoogd¨ by the police as they call it in the Netherlands, it means they allow it, even though its against the law.
2. Prostitution & the red light district
- Prostitution is allowed in the Netherlands to be able to monitor it, enforce laws, and protect those who end up in prostitution. How can you give rights to those that preform an illegal profession?
3. Tulips, Cheeze, Windmils & Wooden shoes
- Typical, but all been said with that.
4. Bikes
- Most innercity travelling is done by bikes, and bikes you shall see everywhere, be warned, you will be amazed by all the broken, rusted, and old bikes standing around all over.
I would go aroundthe months of June - August, you´ll have the best weather.
Regards,
Oliver Smith.
