Question Expired Visa in Brazil and paying fine (muta) on returning home

Hi!

I am currently living in Brazil and on 23 May my initial visa (90 dys) expired. I went to the police federal and was told not to panic and come back another day. I went there three more time and then was told that they cannot renew it now and i have to leave the country. I read up on the internet before coming here that i can stay up to 180 days and without a valid visa withing this period I will have to pay R$8 for each day of my stay. Also, came across an article that said that I have to apply for renewal 1 month before my initial visa expires (found this too late) and that the maximum fine is for 100 days i.e. R$820.

My questions are:
1) What will happen if I leave the country and not pay for the time I stayed here without a valid visa (still within 180 legal days)?
2) Will I have any problems at the airport? will they let me off without paying? if i say i don't have the money?
3) Can I pay it on my return?

Many thanks for all help
David
