Default Re: Oahu or Maui?

There's a reason why the local saying is "Maui no ka 'oi" -- "Maui is the best." Oahu is certainly my least favorite of the islands. While it doesn't lack for charm if you get away from Waikiki, most people tend to stay based there -- missing most of the point of what makes Hawaii so magical!

Maui truly is spectacular. While you've got touristy spots like Lahaina and Kihei, there are large portions of the island that seem virtually undiscovered. On the more-beaten path, the Road to Hana and sunrise/sunset atop Haleakala are musts. But if you want to get a little bit off the beaten path, try pitching a tent at Wai'anapanapa State Park and catch a full moon over the black-sand beach -- simply spell-binding.

Whether you're camping or staying at one of the swank Wailea resorts, you're going to fall for the place. Flights from Oahu on Hawaiian or Aloha go throughout the day, and if you can rouse yourself for a 5am departure, you can probably get a one-way flight for 40 bucks. (If not, you probably won't have to pay much more than $70 each way.) Easy and worth every last penny. Enjoy!
