I would say most things are fairly safe, but you do want to watch out for the Red Light District. I guess you could probably find junkies anywhere. So the best area of Amsterdam to stay is close to the airport, if you're looking for safe and friendly hotels. Of course, there are some other answers for where to stay in Amsterdam.
